The Proposal

In this section, you'll find the big proposal I've put together in order to get this project off the ground, as well as a little bit of reflection of the actual process of making it.

Project Proposal Section 1: Rationale (Approx. 100 Words)

This section provides you with an opportunity to reflect on, review and summarize your progress and achievements through the first 7 units, and the knowledge, skills and understanding you have acquired. What you know now, and what it means to you, compared with what you knew and could do before you started the course, and how this has influenced your choice of pathway and your project proposal.

Over the past 6 months, I’ve learned a wide variety of skills from chroma keys to music video production and even a little bit of photo exhibition thanks to the third lockdown.

My favourite thing to make was actually the music video of all things, mainly because I got to lean into my inner Sonic The Hedgehog fan while animating my original character, Super Sheep

I feel that doing a black and white cartoon will help diversify the range of characters I have once I start up “Slamination Studios.” I also feel it’ll help me practice composing an original soundtrack like I did with Captain Cartridge

Project Proposal Section 2: Project Concept (Approx. 200 Words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to clearly explain the concept and aims of your project, the research and ideas that will support its development, what you anticipate producing, the levels and types of resources that you will need and an indication of the form in which you will complete and present your final realisation within the allocated timescale.

The main aim for this project is to see if I can capture the aesthetic and style of humour from the 1920s and 30s. The reason I want to capture that particular aesthetic is because it’ll allow me to see if I can pull off different styles of both humour and art effectively.

I anticipate that I’ll produce a 3-5 minute cartoon (possibly in Dreams PS4) starring a brand new character, it’ll take on a humorous tone similar to that of cartoons from the 1920s and 30s.

I could look into the people that made these old cartoons, I.E: Walt Disney and Max Fleischer, along with those guys I could take a peek at general 1920s culture so that I can get more context for what things were like in those days, I could also look into the history and fundamentals of Animation as a whole.

The main resource I’ll be using to do secondary research are internet videos that look back on that point in time although if I can find scans of a book called “The Animator’s Survival kit” I’ll try and look at those as well.

I estimate that this’ll take me around 12 weeks to make.

Project Proposal Section 3: Evaluation (Approx. 50 Words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to explain how you will reflect on, and evaluate, your work, as both an on-going activity and at the conclusion of the project. You should describe how you intend to record your decision-making and how you will document changes to your ideas as work progresses. The evaluation should be referenced to your stated aims and be reflective and analytical rather than a description of actions completed.

I’ll continually take screenshots/videos and explain why I’m doing something.

I’ll record my decision making via the reflection I usually do.

I’ll simply reflect on the potential change of ideas.

I’ll discuss why I’m doing what I’m doing.

Once I’ve finished, I’ll look back and discuss what could have done better.

Section 4: Project Action Plan And Timetable

This section provides you with an opportunity to outline your planning and organisation over a period of weeks and the activities you will need to carry out in order to successful complete your project within the agreed timeframe. It is important that you consider how you will balance ambition, time and realism in the realisation of the project. This should include what you are going to do, how you will do it and by when. The more time and thought you give to planning your project the more successful it is likely to be. Remember to include time taken to visit sources; sourcing materials, questionnaires, access to workshops, tutorial and peer group feedback opportunities and where you will incorporate independent study.

To be honest, I’ve chosen to ignore the template provided on Teams and went with a project management table instead because I think doing that will benefit me way more due to my familiarity with that particular format (and it serves as a good luck charm):

After this project proposal, I plan on spending three weeks doing research. (as well as a little bit of experimentation here and there throughout)

Afterwards I plan on spending at least a week on writing the whole script.

And then I want to spend two weeks creating the storyboard (with an asset list coming right after it’s done), two weeks will be spent actually producing the whole thing and an extra week will be spend gathering and implementing potential feedback (while doing a little bit of animation cleaning)

After I’ve done all of that, I’ll then release the short on YouTube and the new “FMP” website and then I’ll spend the rest of the project evaluating and reflecting on everything

Section 5: Bibliography Of Proposed Research Sources (Harvard Referencing Format)

This section provides an opportunity to record the initial research sources, both primary and secondary, that you intend to use. Your sources of research should be as wide as possible.

Planned Primary Research

For the primary research, I mainly plan on doing lots of experimentation with Dreams for the PS4 in order to gauge whether or not I’ll be able to pull off certain ideas (I.E: a green screen based joke where the characters end up in a colourful environment), the reason I want to do this as the main form of primary research is because it’ll allow me to develop further ideas based on how well I can do the various things I choose to experiment with (I.E: if I’m able to pull off that green screen experiment, I’ll be able to come up with jokes that take advantage of my findings)

I also plan on doing at least a single questionnaire to help me gauge how knowledgeable people are when it comes to cartoons of the 1920s, that way I can increase rewatchability by hiding Easter eggs that first time viewers and/or those that aren’t as in the know when it comes to black and white cartoons. This means that if a kid were to watch this short and later find out about the medium and people that inspired it, they could come back and notice all the hidden Easter eggs that may have went over their heads the first time around.

So How Was Making This Thing?

I've got to be honest, making this proposal was a slight pain in the neck. The main reason for this is due to certain section having very tight word counts (I.E: 50-200 words overall), which I found to be a bit of a pain to deal with, especially with the fact I had at least 2 ideas running around in my head already, so trying to figure out how to express them all was a nightmare.

Luckily, I had the bright idea of doing a little bit of idea development first (since that would help me determine what would go into the actual proposal), and with a little bit of grit, spit and feedback from my tutors (and several last minute additions), I was able to finally get this thing done.

With that being said, now we can get going on looking into the context of what I'm going for
